Lighting

Looking to enroll in lighting tech classes in Pittsburgh that fit your schedule? Tech25 allows students to book sessions at convenient dates and times. Similar to scheduling a yoga or fitness class, you can book time out to drop into a class on your time! Schedule now to build practical skills through hands-on instruction and earn Credly certifications that you can use on your resume, CV, and LinkedIn profile.
Beginner Lighting Training
No experience required! Never touched a light before? That's fine! In our beginner Tech25 Lighting Training, we'll instruct you at ground level using a few simple slimPAR lights and an Obey console. You'll learn basic DMX cabling, how to make basic moods and presets, see how lights interact when they shine on different surfaces, and gain an understanding of fundamental color theory and color mixing.
You'll be introduced to hazers, foggers, movers, fresnels, and more. This training will also show you different lighting applications such as uplighting, color washes, and spotlights. By the end of this training, you'll be able to program a few standard lights. This is the class for you to start shining.
Intermediate Lighting Training
Build on your lighting knowledge with our Intermediate Lighting Training. Here, you'll graduate from the Obey console into using and Obsidian Onyx NX1 console, including Obsidian's Netron EP4 (4 universe Art-Net nodes), and an introduction to Capture software. Addressing lights becomes more complex with multiple fixtures and presets, as well as incorporating deeper knowledge of DMX universes. In addition to SlimPARs, we introduce to you a Volux Spectra 300 mover.
Consider this training an introduction to Lighting Design where the difference between theatre and concert designs are discussed and you learn to execute a show from scratch. Showfile hierarchy is taught, cues and cuelists are built, and show busking fundamentals are a main focus. By the end of our intermediate class, you'll be able to start and execute a show from scratch.
Advanced Lighting Training
Ready to run main stage lights and understand laser safety? Our Advanced Lighting Training is built for you to become proficient in programming and designing in Onyx with the knowledge and experience required of a Lead Lighitng Tech. Capture software is intensively used in this course, allowing you to create usable showfiles without a console. We'll introduce you to Dalos, an app inside Onyx for moving images and mapping.
Dive deep into ETC fixtures, Volux movers, hazers, wireless DMX, bar lights, mirror balls, and groundbreaking Minuit Une fixtures (seen on Nine Inch Nails' 2025-2026 Peel It Back tour). Create the lighting design of your dreams.
